Reflexology
A Brief History of Reflexology
From many years ago (3000BC), hieroglyphics where discovered in ancient
China and ancient Egypt indicating that a form of Reflexology (foot
massage) was practiced amongst their people. North American tribes
have also been found to have used and continue to use a Reflexology
type practice in their healing rituals.
In the late 1800's, doctor William Fitzgerald discovered,
by accident, that if he applied pressure to the fingers of his patients,
he was able to create a local anaesthetic effect on different parts
of the body; following his experiments through, using clamps and
elastic bands, he discovered he was able to practise minor operations.
He followed on to discover 'Zone Therapy' in conjunction with these
pressure points linking zones found in the hands and feet to other
parts of the body. William Fitzgerald worked with many doctors in
the early 1900's, and later, impressing one of his nurses Eunice
Ingram,
to develop his 'Zone Therapy' further into what is today
- Reflexology. Eunice did her research impressing Chiropractors and
Osteopaths before she wrote two well known books 'Stories feet can
tell' (1938) and 'Stories feet have told' (1963) and opening
'The
Institute of Reflexology', which her nephew Dwight Byers continued
after her death in 1974.
Many people have continued with further research into the benefits
of Reflexology by schools being opened all over the world
to train individuals in the history, benefits and practice of this
wonderful therapy.
What does a Reflexology treatment involve?
Pure Relaxation! On arrival to my treatment room you will be encouraged
to relax on my therapy couch, whilst listening to soothing music.
We will complete a thorough medical history (if this is your first
appointment) to assess your needs and establish any issues that might
be inhibiting your health. This normally takes between 15-30 minutes.
Once this has been completed and we have established that Reflexology
is the most beneficial treatment to you, I will ask you to remove
your shoes and socks and commence with some relaxing foot massage.
As the foot and you begin to relax, I will proceed into the deeper
Reflexology treatment, which involves working on more specific areas
of the foot, with Thumb-walking, Leverage, Rotation and 'Hook-in'
techniques. These specific areas, are mapped out to coincide with
ALL parts of your whole body, and will stimulate each and every individual
area to be bought back to its natural state. As the treatment evolves
a feeling of pure relaxation will be felt, relieving the body and
mind of all tension. When the body is in this state it is able to
work to its full potential, allowing self-healing of any distressed
areas to begin. The treatment lasts for approximately 45 minutes working
on both feet. Reflexology may also be done in the same manner on
the hands when necessary. The treatment is non-invasive and has very
few contra-indications.
What ailments can Reflexology assist with?
I truly believe that nearly all illnesses originate from stress
or stress related issues, so Reflexology can assist in the majority
of problems experienced in today's way of living. Here are a few
examples:
Stress, Headaches and Migraines, Menopausal problems, Digestive problemsDetoxing, High Blood Pressure, Insomnia, Arthritis, Constipation, Boost Immune System, Back problems, Menstrual Problems, Fertility and Depression.
